Planning an overseas Test trip

Build an overseas cricket trip around the days you want in the ground. A five-day Test can fill most of a week, but it can also finish early. Choose a city you would enjoy with an unexpected free afternoon, leave room for the journey, and decide how much of the match matters to you before buying flights.

Choose the cricket first

Begin with the Test fixtures and the host board’s announcement. A future touring programme identifies an intended series; the confirmed match venue and dates are what let you book a cricket holiday. Check the opponent as well as the ground. Australia’s December 2026 and January 2027 Tests are against New Zealand; England’s March 2027 appearance at the MCG is the separate anniversary Test.

For a first overseas Test, one city and two or three match days is a manageable starting point. Staying for the whole scheduled match gives you the unfolding contest, including a possible last-day chase. Day 1 offers the opening atmosphere; a later day asks you to accept that some of the story has already happened. A Day 5 ticket needs a flexible sightseeing alternative.

Compare the Australia, South Africa, India and West Indies guides for the kind of trip you want. The MCG and SCG work for a city holiday; Newlands makes Cape Town the base; Kensington Oval puts the cricket in Bridgetown; Eden Gardens means planning around Kolkata.

Book a seat you can use for a whole day

A cheap exposed seat can feel very different after several long sessions. Open the ground plan before choosing a price band and compare the likely sun, covered rows, steps and distance to facilities. The MCG, SCG, Adelaide and Perth guides explain these choices. Use the accessibility page before paying if you need step-free seating or a companion place. If your usual Test seat is in the Mound Stand at Lord’s, use its cover and elevation as a starting point for comparing the unfamiliar Australian plan.

Start at the national board or ground ticket page, then follow its seller link. If choosing a cricket package, get the match days, seat category, accommodation nights and transfer arrangements in writing. A package described by the number of hotel nights may contain fewer days of cricket. Check whether the final scheduled day is included and what happens to excursions when play continues.

Entry documents for a British visitor

The following is for leisure travel on a full British citizen passport. Before booking a Test holiday, open the linked country advice and read the rules for your own circumstances, including children, dual nationality and any transit stop. Keep the passport used in the application aligned with the documents and booking you travel on. Other passport types can have different conditions.

Australia: a visa is required. British citizens can usually use an eVisitor or Electronic Travel Authority; the ETA application uses the official Australian ETA app. The passport must cover the planned stay, and a connecting country may require extra validity. Follow the government links in the Australia guide before arranging a Boxing Day or Sydney trip.

India: a visa is required unless you hold a valid OCI entitlement. Check whether the e-visa route suits your passport, arrival airport and visit. FCDO specifies six months’ passport validity after arrival and two blank pages. Its current advice also covers the e-arrival card and health declaration. Read those arrival steps close to departure; they are separate from permission to visit. Start with the India destination guide.

South Africa: British citizen tourists can visit without a visa for up to 90 days. The passport needs at least 30 days’ validity after departure and two blank pages. FCDO also lists an online traveller declaration and specific requirements for children. Use the South Africa guide when planning a Newlands stay, and check the entry stamp on arrival.

West Indies: this cricket team represents several countries and territories, so there is no single visitor-entry rule. For Barbados, British citizens do not need a visitor visa, must have an onward or return ticket and must complete the online immigration and customs form before arrival. Authorities decide the permitted stay. For a second island, read that island’s advice separately through the West Indies guide.

Put the match in local time

The fixture time beside an overseas ground is its local first ball; the UK time is there for comparing travel and calls home. Save flights, hotel check-in and cricket in a calendar with the correct city time zone. A UK overnight broadcast can be an ordinary morning start at the ground. Set your alarm for the local gate opening, with time to find the correct entrance.

During December and January, Melbourne and Sydney are 11 hours ahead of the UK, Adelaide is ten and a half, Brisbane ten and Perth eight. Travelling from Perth to an eastern Test changes your clock again. Australian states do not all observe daylight saving, so one fixed “Australia time” is unsuitable for a multi-city cricket itinerary.

Cape Town is two hours ahead of the UK during the UK winter and one during the UK summer. Kolkata is five and a half hours ahead in the UK winter and four and a half in summer. Barbados is four hours behind in winter and five behind in summer. For travel around either country’s clock changes, use the actual match date.

Insure the journey and the days between Tests

Arrange travel insurance when you commit money to the trip. Look at medical treatment, emergency travel home, cancellation and missed-departure conditions against the itinerary you are buying. Declare existing medical conditions as the insurer requires. A month following several Tests may exceed a policy’s single-trip duration even when the policy runs for a year.

Cricket admission and travel costs have different refund rules. Do not assume insurance will reimburse flights because rain removes a day’s play or a Test finishes early. Ask the insurer about the event circumstances that matter to your booking and retain its answer. Keep the ticket seller’s rain policy with your documents; our rain guide explains the cricket side.

Include non-cricket plans in the insurance conversation: a hired car, coastal activity or excursion between matches can change the cover you need. Read FCDO advice for every destination and transit country, including regional warnings. Carry the assistance number somewhere accessible without a working mobile connection when heading to the ground.

Build the budget around match days

Price the complete cricket week: admission for each person and day, accommodation, airport journeys, local transport, food inside and outside the ground, and the move to the next Test. Compare the total before deciding that a lower-priced seat in another city saves money. Keep a separate allowance for a free day if the match ends early.

Use the seller’s currency when comparing ticket categories. Australian guides quote Australian dollars; South Africa uses rand, India rupees and Barbados Barbados dollars. Check your own card’s foreign-currency charges and the exchange rate offered at payment. Keep access to a second payment method separate from the phone or wallet holding your match ticket.

For a long Test day, find out how food outlets and public transport accept payment before leaving the hotel. Download the ticket using the official seller’s instructions and carry a charged phone. Put the booking reference and ticket-office contact in your travel notes so a lost device does not leave you hunting through email outside a busy gate.

Combine Tests without losing the cricket

Count nights from the first arrival to the morning after the final day you want to watch. If you intend to follow every ball, leave after the scheduled finish date. Booking an onward flight during Day 5 makes leaving the cricket part of your plan, whatever the score. Keep the first evening after arrival light enough to recover from the journey.

Melbourne and Sydney make a natural pair for Boxing Day and the New Year Test: the MCG and SCG guides connect their match dates with city transport and neighbourhoods to stay in. Book the domestic journey as its own part of the holiday, including airport access and baggage. A flight time alone does not describe the travel day.

For an Indian or Caribbean series, wait for confirmed venues before joining the dots. An inter-island connection or cross-country transfer can determine which Test days are practical. At Newlands, Kensington Oval or Eden Gardens, one settled base may give you more time at the cricket than trying to collect grounds.

Questions before your Test visit

Should I book flights before Test tickets?

Secure the match days and seats that make the trip worthwhile, then commit to travel you can afford to keep. If booking accommodation while waiting for tickets, read its cancellation deadline and put that deadline in your calendar.

Can I visit several West Indies grounds on one visa?

Do not assume so. Check each country or territory separately for the passport you hold, including any transit stop. Barbados entry conditions do not settle the rules for another island on the tour.

What if my overseas Test ends early?

Keep your accommodation and onward travel plans usable without the cricket. Choose an excursion or city day you would enjoy, and read the ticket seller’s terms for the unused match day. Flights and hotel nights have their own conditions.

Is the next Australian summer an Ashes tour?

Australia hosts New Zealand in December 2026 and January 2027. England’s MCG anniversary Test is in March 2027. Check the Australia destination page for the distinction between that match and the next full Ashes series.

Where should I compare shade before buying?

Use the stand plan and seating advice on the relevant ground hub, then check the exact block and row on the ticket map. Our sun and shade guide brings the English and Australian grounds together.
