Eden Gardens puts you inside one of Test cricket’s great stories, with Kolkata’s restaurants, river and historic streets close to the cricket. The next Test date is TBC; plan the city now and match your booking to the official fixture when it is announced.
Eden Gardens at a glance
There is no Eden Gardens Test in BCCI’s published 2026–27 men’s home season. The five Australia Tests are allocated to Nagpur, Chennai, Guwahati, Ranchi and Ahmedabad. Kolkata’s listed January international is an ODI against Zimbabwe on 3 January 2027. For a future Eden Test, wait for an exact date, opponent and playing hours before making the cricket the fixed centre of an overseas booking.

The match that gives Eden Gardens a special place in Test conversation is India against Australia in March 2001. After following on, India turned a seemingly lost contest into victory. VVS Laxman’s 281 and Rahul Dravid’s long partnership changed the match and helped change the series.
Eden also hosted India’s first day-night Test, against Bangladesh from 22 November 2019. The pink ball and evening sessions gave the familiar ground a different rhythm. That history does not determine the hours of the next Test: a daytime fixture and a day-night fixture produce different journeys, meals and sunset conditions for spectators.
The scale of the bowl is part of the appeal. For a first visit, arrive early enough to watch the outfield fill, identify the pavilion and follow the players warming up. During a Test, you have time to notice changes in the field and the crowd’s response to a tight spell. Leave your first evening loose enough to talk through the day over dinner in Kolkata.
For a first Eden Gardens Test trip, two consecutive days give you a useful sense of the match’s development. You can learn the approach to your gate on the first morning and return with a clearer idea of the seating, food arrangements and journey home. If your party includes occasional cricket watchers, agree which sessions matter most before committing everyone to a full series of tickets.
Opening day brings the toss and the first view of the pitch. A middle day can make a good centrepiece for a Kolkata stay, with sightseeing before or after it. A final-day booking may bring a dramatic finish, but the match can end earlier. Keep the Victoria Memorial or a river-side outing available as an alternative if there is no cricket left to watch.

Next Test prices: TBC. Prices in Indian rupees.
Start with BCCI’s confirmed fixture and the Cricket Association of Bengal’s match announcement. Follow the seller linked by the organiser for that particular Test. Kolkata hosts different cricket competitions, so an IPL ticket page, an old international sales notice and a future Test booking are separate things. Keep the event name and date visible while comparing seating options.
At Eden, record the block, tier, row and gate alongside the price. Ask whether the booking covers a single day or several days, how the ticket is delivered, and whether you must collect or exchange anything before admission. If collection is required, build it into your Kolkata arrival day. Carry the identification specified by the seller, with the name matching the booking where required.
Accessible positions and companion arrangements need a direct conversation with CAB before you buy. Describe the route and view you need, including whether you remain in a wheelchair or transfer to a seat. The separate accessibility guide sets out the questions to put in writing so that the booking, entrance and facilities work together.
Eden Gardens uses lettered seating blocks alongside commemorative stand names. CAB’s own stadium documents refer to blocks including B, F, G, H and L, while its January 2025 announcement records the unveiling of the Jhulan Goswami and Col N.J. Nair stands. Use the block shown on the current ticket map when booking and the gate on your ticket when arriving.
At Eden, an end view helps you follow the bowler’s line; a side view shows the batter’s movement and close field differently. Compare lower-row proximity with the wider field setting visible higher up, considering the stairs too.
Shade deserves its own decision. Kolkata is in the Northern Hemisphere, and the sun crosses the southern part of the sky during the winter cricket season. Broadly, western seating faces the morning light and has the afternoon sun moving behind it; eastern seating can face the later sun. A roof’s edge, the level and the row determine how much of that light reaches a particular seat.
For a long Eden day, ask about the actual row’s cover at the expected playing hours. Heat and humidity can make an exposed walk or queue feel very different from sitting under a roof. A stand name alone does not tell you whether the front rows are shaded. Choose somewhere you can watch comfortably through several sessions and take an interval break without a difficult return to your place.

Read the match’s permitted-items list before leaving your hotel. Confirm the rules for bags, bottles, food, cameras and power banks; an allowance at another Indian venue does not establish the rule at Eden. If you need medication or equipment, arrange it with CAB in advance and retain the response. Use the seller’s instructions for entry rather than an old social-media packing list.
For the first interval, find out where your block’s refreshments and toilets are before joining the busiest queue. If friends separate, choose a meeting point tied to your own block and level. Keep any re-entry arrangement clear before leaving the stadium during play. For travel-health preparation, use the official NaTHNaC TravelHealthPro India page linked in the sources.
Use the India Meteorological Department’s Kolkata report when packing for Eden Gardens, and check again on match morning. Consider the walk to Esplanade, the middle sessions and the journey home. Keep an extra layer accessible if play continues into the evening, and agree a meeting point with children.
Esplanade is the practical Metro starting point for many visitors approaching Eden Gardens from central Kolkata. It connects the Blue and Green lines; the Green Line now runs between Howrah Maidan and Salt Lake Sector V. Work out the correct exit and the final walk to your ticketed gate, because reaching Esplanade is only the rail part of the journey.
Do not plan around an operating Eden Gardens Metro station. The Purple Line’s existing service runs between Joka and Majerhat, with the onward section towards Esplanade under construction in the government’s September 2026 update.
Taxis and app cabs offer another approach from Park Street, BBD Bagh or your hotel. Enter the required gate or agree a nearby permitted drop-off with the driver, then leave time for any final walk. After play, crowds and traffic can make a pickup at the exact stadium entrance inconvenient. Agree a recognisable meeting place and share it with everyone in the party before going in.
For the return from Eden Gardens, check Metro operating hours and keep your hotel address available. Discuss the Esplanade exit and street approach beforehand if a companion needs a short walk or step-free route.
Compare connecting flights to Kolkata’s Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport. Emirates offers a London Heathrow–Kolkata itinerary through Dubai; compare the whole journey, connection time and arrival date when choosing a route. For a Test trip, an arrival day in Kolkata before the cricket gives you time to settle, sort tickets and learn the ground approach.
The Government of India lists the United Kingdom among countries eligible for e-Visa applications. A British tourist visiting for the cricket should use the official government portal, choose the appropriate tourist category and read the eligibility conditions for their circumstances. The published requirements include at least six months’ passport validity when applying, a return or onward ticket and sufficient funds. Some passport and family-origin circumstances require a regular visa instead.
Apply with time to receive the grant before travelling and follow the instructions on that grant, including the permitted entry points and stay conditions. The government also provides an e-Arrival card process; read the current instructions alongside your visa preparation. Keep the passport, permission and accommodation details readily available for the airline and arrival formalities.
Kolkata uses Indian Standard Time, UTC+5:30, throughout the year. It is five and a half hours ahead of the UK during GMT and four and a half hours ahead during British Summer Time. Put your flight times into the calendar with their local zones, especially across an overnight connection. For an eventual dated Test, use the local first-ball time and the corresponding UK line in this guide.
Park Street works well if evenings out are a large part of your Kolkata trip. It puts restaurants and cafés into the same area as your accommodation search, while leaving a separate journey to Eden Gardens. Compare the actual address, the walk to the Metro and the return taxi arrangement. A room described simply as central Kolkata may sit well away from the part of Park Street you expect.
BBD Bagh, also called Dalhousie Square, offers a different base around the older commercial centre. It suits visitors who want to explore that side of the city between cricket days. Compare the hotel-to-gate route with your evening plans: a convenient cricket approach and a convenient dinner location are two different parts of the stay.
THE Park Kolkata’s official address is 17 Park Street. The LaLiT Great Eastern lists 1, 2, 3 Old Court House Street in Dalhousie Square. They give you two confirmed hotels in the areas described here. Compare the exact room, breakfast times, accessibility and cancellation conditions for your own dates; the cards also let you search the wider neighbourhoods.

For several days of cricket, decide whether you want to return to the same room throughout or combine Kolkata with another stop. Keeping one base avoids repacking around the match. Until the next Eden Test is dated, use flexible accommodation terms and keep sightseeing days in the plan so the visit remains enjoyable whatever the eventual cricket schedule.
Park Street is an easy theme for an evening after Eden Gardens: choose a restaurant before leaving the ground, give the party a meeting time and make the journey together. The area’s restaurants, cafés and nightlife make it worth an evening even for someone who has spent the whole day elsewhere in Kolkata. Keep a dinner booking loose enough to enjoy the final session.
From a BBD Bagh hotel, return to your room before heading to Park Street or choose dinner nearer your base. Between Eden match days, alternate a longer evening out with a quieter meal.

Give Victoria Memorial a separate non-match visit so you have time for the building, galleries and grounds without watching the clock for the first session. Look up the current admission arrangements and opening days before setting out. It pairs naturally with time around the Maidan, but decide how much walking suits your party after several days on stadium steps.
Howrah Bridge brings the river into your Kolkata itinerary. Choose a viewpoint and a route that suit the weather and your available time, or make the river-side area a smaller part of a wider city outing. A visit here is a different experience from crossing beneath the Hooghly on the Green Line: one gives you the bridge and river scene, the other a useful transport journey.
Keep a Kolkata sightseeing day available if the Test finishes early. For a separate visit inside Eden Gardens, contact CAB before travelling and ask whether visitor access is offered on your dates.
Ask CAB about official hospitality for the particular Eden Gardens Test. The association has described corporate boxes in B and L blocks, but the package available to a spectator depends on the event. Before paying, get the match date, seating position, included food and drink, entry gate and ticket delivery in writing.
For Eden hospitality, ask whether the group sits together, whether viewing is inside or outside, and how guests move between their seats and the hospitality room. Check the access route as carefully as the meal.
