Newlands puts Test cricket beneath Table Mountain and Devil’s Peak, with grass banks and a close boundary. England return for the New Year Test from Sunday 3 to Thursday 7 January 2027. The official ticket listings give 10:30 as first ball.

South Africa also host Australia from 27 to 31 October 2026, with the current official Day 1 ticket listing giving a 10:30 start. The England day-by-day comparison below refers to January’s separate New Year match.

Arrive in Cape Town before your first booked day, leaving time for the flight, transfer and check-in. After the Test, allow days for the mountain, Peninsula or Winelands. If following England’s whole series, build the transfer from Centurion into your itinerary.

Sunday 3 January brings the toss and opening spell. Monday and Tuesday let you follow the innings and changing field settings. Consecutive Newlands days also help you learn when your position catches the sun.

Wednesday 6 January is Day 4 and Thursday is Day 5. A close finish is one possibility; a completed match is another. Keep a Cape Town alternative ready for either late day. For an England trip, make the ticket position your first decision: Days 1–4 currently show sold out, while the fifth-day page says sale starts soon. A calendar date on its own is insufficient reason to book flights around an assumed seat.

Use Cricket South Africa’s ticket catalogue and open the Newlands event for the exact day you want. As checked on 12 October 2026, the England public listings for 3–6 January show sold out. Day 5 is listed from R245 but has a sale-starts-soon status; no release time is displayed. Keep any later release or returned inventory tied to that official channel.

For Australia in October, the official catalogue currently lists Days 1–4 on sale from R245. This gives a second option if your aim is a Newlands Test experience and your travel dates are flexible. Compare the complete price for your party in the live basket, including each child’s category. Junior prices and January public-seat prices are TBC here; the zero shown beside sold-out listings is not a free-admission offer.

Grass admission and a numbered grandstand seat create different days, particularly if you need a chair or shelter. Send access requirements to the Newlands ticket office before booking, and save each ticket with its date, area and entrance.

Stands

Choose between a fixed seat and the grass embankments before choosing a block. The Oaks give Newlands some of its distinctive character, but tree shade moves during the day and grass involves a different sitting position from a grandstand. The permitted collapsible chair can make a long grass-bank visit more comfortable; it belongs only in the embankment area covered by your ticket.

The President’s Pavilion and Members’ Pavilion are separate areas on the precinct plan. Hospitality, club admission and a public reserved seat have different entitlements. Ask for the actual area and seat details when booking; a general description such as pavilion does not explain the view or the route to it. For public seating, compare the North Stand and Railway Stand against your preferred angle on the pitch.

The mountain view changes around Newlands. Compare a view towards Table Mountain and Devil’s Peak with an angle along the bowler’s line. Decide whether your priority is watching movement off the pitch, seeing the field or enjoying the setting. The plan below locates the areas.

Cape Town is in the southern hemisphere. Around the January Test, the midday sun is in the northern sky; exposed eastern positions can face the later western light. Roofs, trees and your row alter the shade. Carry a hat and sunscreen even for a covered booking, and think about where you will take a break during a long afternoon.

Southern hemisphere: the sun moves through the northern sky. Approximate stand positions and pitch axis; front rows catch more sun. Roof and row affect shade.

North Stand

Despite the stand name, this seating lies on the northeastern side of the precinct.

  • Covered: Check the ticketed level and row for overhead cover
  • Morning: Open positions face the field with light arriving from the east
  • Afternoon: Western light can reach open rows across the ground

Railway Stand

Railway-side seating gives a different angle across the pitch from the pavilions.

  • Covered: Cover depends on the reserved position
  • Morning: East-facing rows can receive morning light
  • Afternoon: The western sun moves behind this side; exact shelter varies by row

North West Grass Embankment

A grass position, with collapsible chairs permitted under the venue rules.

  • Covered: Open grass; take sun protection
  • Morning: Exposed grass can receive direct sunlight
  • Afternoon: Shade depends on nearby structures and trees

President’s Pavilion

Check the booking entitlement: the pavilion includes hospitality areas such as the Century Club.

  • Covered: Confirm the public or hospitality position and its roof
  • Morning: Exposed positions receive light from the eastern side
  • Afternoon: Roof and row control shelter as the sun moves west

Members’ Pavilion

Admission depends on the applicable members or guest arrangement.

  • Covered: Ask the club or venue about your allocated position
  • Morning: South-side positions face towards the northern sky
  • Afternoon: Cover depends on the seat and pavilion roof

Oaks Grass Embankment

The Oaks offer Newlands grass-bank character; keep chairs within the permitted embankment area.

  • Covered: Tree shade varies; no fixed roof across the grass
  • Morning: Sun begins behind eastern positions but exposed grass remains sunny
  • Afternoon: Western light can face this side; tree shadows shift

On the day

Your Newlands day

  • Before first ball — Find the entrance, viewing area and facilities
  • Lunch and tea — Take a break and replenish what you need
  • After play — Use the agreed pickup or confirmed return service

The Newlands England event conditions prohibit outside alcohol, glass containers, cans, ice boxes, cooler bags and umbrellas. Collapsible deckchairs or camping chairs are allowed for grass embankment seating only. Leave metal cutlery and other prohibited items at your accommodation. Pack according to the Newlands event page even if another South African venue allowed a different bag or picnic arrangement.

For a grass ticket, pack a chair, hat, sun protection and a manageable bag. Allow space for folded chairs if sharing a taxi. Choose protective clothing and headwear that leave neighbouring spectators a clear view.

Find your Newlands area before the opening over, then locate the facilities for lunch and tea. With children, agree where to meet after a break. Keep your return driver’s contact and hotel address available.

Getting there

Newlands railway station is beside the cricket precinct on the Metrorail Southern Line from Cape Town. Check PRASA’s operating timetable for your date, including the return train after play. The Western Cape Government’s June 2026 update reported no change to Southern Line services. A general route map does not establish the last train, a Sunday service or an event-day extra.

The FCDO lists Metrorail among services with greater risks of theft, violence and unreliability. It identifies internationally recognised e-hailing services booked through their apps, researched private hire and hotel shuttles as generally safer alternatives. If using a car service, wait somewhere suitable until it arrives and match the registration to the booking. Ask your hotel to help plan the complete return journey.

MyCiTi is useful for travel around the central city and Atlantic Seaboard. Use its current journey information for those portions of a trip, then arrange the Newlands connection. A MyCiTi stop named Newlands appears on the Atlantis network, so check the map location carefully: the name alone does not make it a stop for this cricket ground.

For driving, ask Newlands for the Test’s parking and park-and-ride announcement before reserving a vehicle around a particular lot. Arrangements published for previous tournaments belong to those events. The current Test parking locations, prices and shuttle details are TBC. Include your ticketed gate in the enquiry, and agree the collection point with a driver before the crowd leaves together.

  • Newlands station — Southern Line; confirm outward and return services for your date
  • E-hailing or private hire — Use an agreed pickup point and a booking you can identify
  • Match-day parking — Use the Test-specific venue announcement when published

Getting there from the UK

Direct London–Cape Town flights operate during the British winter. British Airways has announced an additional Heathrow service from December 2026. Compare arrival dates, allow recovery time before Newlands and arrange the airport transfer with your accommodation.

The South African High Commission in London states that UK passport holders are visa exempt for visits of up to 90 days and need two unused passport pages for endorsements. Its official immigration guidance was checked on 12 October 2026. Read the requirements for your own passport and circumstances before travel, particularly for a longer visit or a journey with children.

SARS also requires an online traveller declaration before entering or leaving South Africa, effective from 1 July 2026, subject to its limited exceptions. Complete that through the official SARS service and keep the acknowledgement with your travel information. It is a separate customs step from the passport and visa arrangements.

Cape Town uses South African Standard Time, UTC+2, throughout the year. In January it is two hours ahead of the UK: 10:30 at Newlands is 08:30 in Britain. Set local appointments to Cape Town time, including airport pickups and early tours. Budget in rand, shown here as R, and compare payment-card charges before the trip. Keep travel insurance and the provider’s contact details with your booking documents.

Where to stay

Choose the City Bowl for Kloof Street evenings and city sightseeing. Include the repeated journey to Newlands when comparing hotel costs: several days of transfers can change the appeal of a lower room rate.

The V&A Waterfront offers restaurants and time beside the harbour, with city activities for companions who are not attending cricket. Arrange your morning pickup with room for match traffic, and agree where to meet after play.

The Southern Suburbs put you closer to the cricket side of Cape Town. Newlands and neighbouring Claremont are useful areas to compare for consecutive days at the ground. Look at the exact address and route, not just the suburb label. Check breakfast times, air conditioning and the room cancellation terms for your January dates before deciding.

Evenings out

Kloof Street is a good focus for a City Bowl dinner. Allow for leaving Newlands and travelling across the city when booking a table. Tell the restaurant if your arrival depends on play finishing.

At the V&A Waterfront, plan dinner around the harbour restaurants and arrange your return transport. After a full day in the sun, eating near your accommodation may appeal most; keep a longer evening outing for a free day.

Non-match day

Keep Table Mountain for a clear part of your Cape Town stay. The Cableway operates when weather permits, so check its current status before travelling to the lower station. Allow flexibility to swap this outing with another day if conditions change. The mountain you have watched from Newlands becomes a different experience when you look back across the city from above.

Cape Point and the Cape of Good Hope need a separate Peninsula outing. Use SANParks for current access arrangements, opening hours and visitor charges, then choose transport that allows you time there without rushing back for a cricket session. This is a sensible option before or after the Test, or on a spare day once the match has finished.

For the Winelands, select a manageable area and arrange a driver or organised outing if wine tasting is part of the day. Leave enough time for lunch and the journey back to Cape Town. If you want to see behind the scenes at Newlands itself, contact the venue about a tour date; the general tours page describes the Oaks and historic rooms, while the current ground page says visiting arrangements are coming soon.

Hospitality

Newlands lists hospitality in the President’s Pavilion, including the Century Club, alongside other suites and venues. Ask the venue for the England Test offer for your date and the exact cricket ticket included. Compare the viewing seat, food, drinks and access arrangements with the total cost for your party before paying.

If hospitality includes parking or an indoor room, ask how both connect to the viewing seat. Name the Test, party size and any mobility requirement in your enquiry so the venue can propose suitable arrangements.
