The 2027 Ashes ends in Kennington, where England first played a home Test in 1880. Choose a day beneath the gasholders, compare the two ends of the ground and make room for a south London evening.
The Oval at a glance
| Test | Dates | First ball / gates |
|---|---|---|
| ICC World Test Championship Final | 9–13 June 2027 | 10:30 / TBC |
| England men v Australia | 29 July–2 August 2027 | 11:00 / TBC |
The Ashes Test runs from Thursday 29 July to Monday 2 August: Saturday is Day 3 and Sunday Day 4. Earlier in the summer, the World Test Championship Final occupies 9–13 June.

The Oval is the finale of the 2027 men’s Ashes series, following Trent Bridge, Lord’s, Edgbaston and the Utilita Bowl. A last-Test ticket can mean watching a series being decided or seeing its closing chapter after the destination of the urn is settled.
Surrey’s home has been in Kennington since the club formed in 1845. The ground staged the first Test in England in 1880, and England’s defeat here in 1882 gave rise to the Ashes story. The gasholders and Micky Stewart Members’ Pavilion make that history visible around the boundary; find them before concentrating on the field.
Use the Pavilion End and Vauxhall End to orient yourself during the match. JM Finn curves around the west and north, while SSE Energy Solutions occupies the eastern side. Compare those angles when choosing your Oval block.
| Day | What you’re likely to see | Chance match is already over | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Day 1 · Thu | Opening spell and new match | None before it starts | The final Ashes Test’s opening occasion |
| Day 2 · Fri | Opening position developing | Possible, though early | A single day before the weekend |
| Day 3 · Sat | Changing innings and tactics | Possible | A weekend visit with context |
| Day 4 · Sun | Potential chase or finish | Higher than earlier days | A possible result on Sunday |
| Day 5 · Mon | Final passage, short day or none | Highest of these options | Flexible London visitors |
Thursday or Friday is the straightforward choice for an Oval visit built around the Ashes occasion itself: Day 1 begins a fresh match and Day 2 follows its opening story. The weekend brings Days 3 and 4, so read the position before travelling.
Treat Monday 2 August as an optional London day. Surrey’s Day 5 refund terms differ from Days 1–4: even a short passage of play changes the entitlement. The 2027 tariff still needs confirmation.
Ballot open until 15 November 2026. The WTC Final has a separate ticket process; details TBC.
Use the club ticket service. Follow any purchase invitation and compare the day, block, row and full party price before paying.
Surrey’s Ticket Exchange closes 24 hours before the match. The seller is notified after a successful sale; an unsold ticket returns to the original purchaser.
The published Days 1–4 thresholds below concern the match-ticket value. Surrey handles qualifying recent online/telephone card purchases automatically; hospitality has separate terms.

Surrey members have priority to buy Test tickets, which are charged separately. The 2027 comparison lists Surrey & England membership from £341 and County membership at £285, each offering up to eight men’s Test tickets with a maximum four per day; Championship membership at £183 offers four. Choose the membership category that suits your Surrey visits; Ashes seats are subject to availability.
The official public ticket route is tickets.surreycricket.com. Surrey’s app or ticket account also handles the club’s exchange; contact tickets@surreycricket.com or 020 3946 0100 if a booking needs help. Keep the June WTC Final separate from the July Ashes ballot: its ticketing process follows its own announcement.
Surrey’s price page currently lists the 2026 tariff. Check your selected block and junior eligibility when your 2027 purchase window opens.
For a bowling-line view, compare the Vauxhall End part of JM Finn with Bedser at the Pavilion End. JM Finn’s western blocks move towards a side-on angle; SSE Energy Solutions gives an eastern, square-of-the-wicket perspective. Compare higher Oval rows for reading the field and lower positions for boundary proximity.
SSE Energy Solutions faces the afternoon sun. If prolonged exposure is a concern, start with covered rear areas and the mixed angles of JM Finn, then inspect the exact block and row. Sunlight changes across JM Finn’s curve, with front seats exposed below the roof.
The Micky Stewart Members’ Pavilion, Peter May Garden, Laker Balcony and Lock Balcony have eligibility restrictions. An ordinary public ticket does not include all the spaces inside SSE Energy Solutions. The Corinthian Roof Terrace is a hospitality option above JM Finn; the four linked stand guides remain available for a closer look at public seating and the Pavilion.

Public eastern seating, including blocks 21–27 on the ground map. Suits a side-on view. Members’ balconies and hospitality have separate entry.
Public upper and lower seating at the Pavilion End. Suits watching the approach to the wicket; private boxes use their own hospitality tickets.

View hospitality packages →The ECB lists the Oval Ashes first ball at 11:00 and the WTC Final at 10:30. Surrey’s general international guide opens gates two hours before play, but event-specific entrance instructions take precedence. Follow the entrance instructions for your Test.
The Oval is a Category A ground for an international: bring your picnic and non-alcoholic refreshments, not alcohol or glass. One bag per person may measure no more than 45 × 30 × 30cm and must fit beneath the seat. Agree to searches when requested, and keep the route beside your block clear.
Surrey operates a cashless ground and encourages reusable water bottles at its fountains. Find refreshments and toilets serving your actual stand before play, then move between overs. Keep water nearby through long Oval spells.
The general Test session guide lists lunch from 13:00 to 13:40 and an approximate 18:00 close. Interruptions can change the Ashes session times. The June WTC Final’s earlier start makes it especially important to follow that event’s timetable.
The Kia Oval app changed to a brown icon in 2026, and match barcodes activate no earlier than two weeks before attendance. Download the ticket through your Surrey account before joining the entrance queue. Print-at-home alternatives are covered in the accessibility guide for visitors who do not want to rely on a phone.
Oval station on the Northern line is the short approach to the Pavilion end. Vauxhall combines South Western Railway and the Victoria line near the JM Finn end. Surrey’s published estimates vary from six minutes in its live guide to ten in the travel booklet, so allow roughly six to ten before adding the queue at your gate.
For step-free travel, begin with Vauxhall. Oval and Kennington lack a fully step-free street exit. National Rail describes all Vauxhall platforms as step-free; Tube passengers should check street-to-train access and the current lift situation. Kennington’s lifts do not make its street exit fully step-free. Our separate access guide covers this distinction and priority gates.
The Oval has no general match-day parking. At internationals, there is no cycle storage inside the ground either; use permitted external racks or a nearby Santander docking station. Surrey’s published bus routes include 36, 185 and 436, but major-match closures can suspend the nearest stops. Follow the dated travel notice on the actual Test day.
After stumps, the two station choices split the journey differently: Vauxhall is useful for Waterloo services and the Victoria line, while Oval serves Northern line journeys. For a return beyond London, allow for the ground exit and the onward terminal transfer before selecting your train.

Find a parking space →Kennington keeps a Test stay rooted in the ground’s neighbourhood. Vauxhall works well for Victoria line or South Western Railway arrivals, while Waterloo and Westminster make more of the riverside part of the trip. Area-card journeys start at stations, not hotel doors.
Around Kennington station, Surrey’s walk is about 10 minutes; suits local pubs and a neighbourhood base.

For The Oval’s optional fifth day, check the cancellation deadline on the exact room before adding Sunday night to your booking.
The Fentiman Arms sits between Oval, Vauxhall and Kennington and has a beer garden: a natural shortlist choice when your group wants a pub after leaving the ground. The Prince of Wales on Cleaver Square offers another Kennington setting, for an evening in the neighbourhood.
For a Waterloo-based stay, the Southbank Centre’s restaurants and food market offer a different evening beside the river. Check the venue and service hours for your chosen day. On the Ashes Sunday, avoid making a timed meal depend on play ending neatly at 18:00: the fourth day may be precisely when you most want to stay.
With Vauxhall as your base, decide before the final session whether the group is heading towards a nearby pub or continuing along the river. The Pavilion and JM Finn exits lead towards different stations. Meet at your ticketed gate.
The Oval’s official tours can include the Committee Room, Long Room, Museum, changing area and media spaces, subject to availability. Book a date in the club’s calendar before or after your cricket. Match-day tours advertised for county fixtures do not mean a Test ticket includes a behind-the-scenes tour.
Surrey advertises public departures Thursday–Monday at 10:30, with additional Friday–Sunday 13:30 departures; the booking calendar is the place to confirm a particular visit. The current afternoon-tea-and-tour offer is £75 per person; use the booking calendar for your chosen date and ticket type.
The Southbank Centre’s Riverside Terrace at Royal Festival Hall gives a river-facing alternative to another stadium visit. IWM London is a separate daytime option with free general admission. Either can fill a London day if the Oval Test ends early; check its opening times before setting off.
Surrey promotes the fourth-floor Roof Terrace and Duchy Suite among its 2027 premium choices. Compare the space and viewing position alongside the day: a Roof Terrace package above JM Finn is a different experience from an ordinary public ticket in the same stand. Use the official premium-sales team for the fixture, inclusions and access arrangements.
Oval hospitality has its own curtailed-play terms. For Days 1–4, weather refunds are calculated using the highest general-admission ticket value. A match completed the previous day has separate credit/refund provisions. Ask Surrey to identify the terms attached to your quotation before paying for an Ashes group booking.
England play Australia from 29 July to 2 August 2027, with an 11:00 first ball in the ECB schedule. Saturday is Day 3 and Sunday Day 4.
