Tavern Stand at Lord’s: choosing a Test seat
Tavern puts you on the Pavilion End side, looking towards the Nursery End at an angle to the pitch. For an eligible member’s guest, it offers a choice between the open lower seating and a higher view with cover at the rear. The stairs deserve as much attention as the sightline.
Best for: Members’ guests who want an angled Pavilion End perspective and can comfortably manage the stepped seating routes.

The Pavilion End angle
Tavern sits between Mound and Allen, wrapping around the southern side of the playing area. It lets you look along the length of the pitch while also seeing across part of the square. A seat closer to one end of the stand changes that diagonal perspective, so take a moment to compare blocks in the current seat viewer.
The upper tier is worth comparing if you enjoy watching the captain build a field around a batter. From a higher position, look for the spaces between the close catchers and boundary riders and follow how those spaces change when the bowling switches ends. The lower tier brings the near boundary into a more immediate part of your view.
Tavern’s angle suits a spectator who wants to keep the bowler and the far end in the same sweep of vision. Think about both ends of a Test over: the preferred bowling perspective reverses as play changes direction. Compare Tavern with Mound for a stronger side-on angle, and with Allen for another position beside the Pavilion.

Shelter through the three sessions
The lower and concourse seating in Tavern is open. Cover is available towards the rear of the upper seating, so confirm the row in MCC’s current viewer. A ticket labelled Tavern alone does not settle whether you will have a roof above you. Choose a rear upper position if overhead protection is an important part of your day.
In the morning session, roofed Tavern positions generally offer shade. After lunch the stand has a mixture of sun and shade, with the exact seat and row affecting your exposure. For the evening session, keep sun protection available in the open seating and a layer ready as the air cools. Treat the yellow bands on the plan as a general guide for a sunny summer day.
Spending a Test in the enclosure
Tavern is part of the Members’ Friends’ Enclosures. An eligible MCC member can arrange a guest ticket, with the seating permissions set by that ticket. Before making plans as a group, settle whether you have a reserved position or access to an unreserved area. That decision affects how you choose your place together at the start of the day.
For a family using Tavern, the upper tier’s height and steps are useful points to discuss before accepting an invitation. Younger spectators may enjoy being closer to the boundary below, while others will prefer the wider picture above. Ask about the specific Test’s seating arrangements if your family needs an alcohol-free area.

Stairs, food and the arrival route
Tavern’s upper-tier approach has 44 steps in the AccessAble guide, and its standard rows also require steps. The guide lists no designated wheelchair positions there. Contact MCC for suitable seating elsewhere if that climb or repeated journeys at intervals would be difficult. Choose the seating route first, then the view.
The Members’ Bar is behind Tavern’s lower tier. There is no dedicated food and drink outlet within the upper seating area, so allow time to return downstairs when you need refreshments. Identify the nearest suitable toilet route before play; that makes it easier to judge how often you want to leave an upper seat during a long session.
MCC suggests Warwick Avenue or Edgware Road for spectators heading to Tavern. Once at Lord’s, use the gate printed on your ticket. Keep the ticket or enclosure pass available when returning to the stand after a break, and agree a meeting point with companions before separating in the concourse.
Booking Tavern for the 2027 Tests
Tavern’s Members’ Friends’ Enclosure access needs to be arranged through an eligible MCC member. Ask the member organising your visit to confirm the permitted level for the actual Test day, along with ticket conditions and any dress requirements. The lower seating is open; rear upper seating offers cover.
MCC’s development programme places the intended start of Tavern’s redevelopment in autumn 2027, subject to members’ approval. The new Allen project is separate. For the summer Tests, choose Tavern using the seating arrangement offered for your match, with the existing upper-tier staircase and cover split in mind.
